Behind the Sun, By the Sea, portrays a complex encounter with the local space of the city of Bat Yam. Located on the seashore south of Tel Aviv, Bat Yam was established as a city of immigrants. Being found in a strategic location, Bat Yam played a vital role in the Israeli war for Independence. This history of war and occupation is well inscribed in the city's landscape in the shape of war memorials and monuments. But what (his)stories do the people who live in the city tell? Based on conversations with different women who migrated to Bat Yam, the movie gives the local landscape multiple perspectives, through varied voices. Reimagining the potential surface of the city comes to life in the body and movement of dancers. The memories of the city which are embodied in the dancer's body, create counter-monuments to the city's collective memory.
